BOUNDARIES. Identify, set, maintain, and enforce appropriate boundaries when interacting with clients. Learn to use good communication skills through active and reflective listening.
CRISIS CALLS. Understand the four stages of a crisis and the steps people go through to cope with crises. Learn crisis intervention steps and techniques. Develop telephone skills to respond to crisis calls.
DIVERSITY. Learn what your personal biases are and what steps to take in order to address them. Understand how to deal with diverse situations and populations.
DOCUMENTATION. Complete intake paperwork and help residents settle in at Safe Harbor. Learn to give referrals and find resources. Properly document interactions with residents.
EFFECTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Learn what domestic violence is about and types of abuse. Understand contributing factors that create domestic violence. Decide who is eligible for Safe Harbor's services and learn to screen clients.
EMPATHIZING VS. ENABLING. Become a "helper" rather than a "rescuer" when it comes to dealing with residents. Learn how to set boundaries and remain assertive in conversations with residents.
LAW ENFORCEMENT. Be able to judge when and who to contact in a variety of different situations. Refer residents to appropriate resources.
PERPETRATOR PROFILE. Learn how perpetrators of domestic violence can use intimidation, emotional abuse, isolation, blaming, economic abuse, coercion, and threats to gain power and control over victims.
PROTECTIVE ORDERS. Learn how protective orders can help victims of domestic violence. Be able to refer victims to agencies that will help them obtain protective orders.
RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT. Dispel rape myths by learning the facts about sexual violence. Understand sexual violence on a national and statewide level. Know the components of consent.
SHELTER POLICIES. Learn about the different services provided by Safe Harbor and the responsibilities of staff members. Understand the importance of confidentiality when working with clients.
VICTIM PROFILE. Know that a victim profile is a generalization, which may or may not apply to every victim. Identify common characteristics of a victim. Identify some reasons why a victim stays in a violent relationship.
